Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
