The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
