The star has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to save the UK's small concert spaces.

He was given the award on October 16 as his new release People Watching was named the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the crucial part local spots played in his early career.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have shut down – roughly one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, well-known musicians including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

Fender also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds supported venues that were confronting possible closure due to challenges stemming from floods, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations received monetary aid in improving amenities and technical equipment that helped artists and audiences.

"The idea that money from performances in big venues backs the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

"And I donated a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to the media.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective gave their winnings to the youth organization that supported their band, as well as other local music groups.

And 1994 winners they contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"The victory was ample," remarked artist the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted another person's life."

Recently, the MVT shared it had rescued a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in the city were acquired under the community ownership initiative, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the venues.
