Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
