Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
